A Season of Becoming: The Heart behind Spectrum Learning Academy.

I cannot express how happy, driven, excited, and anxiously hopeful I am for everything Spectrum Learning Academy is becoming. This dream is no longer just an idea — it’s a movement, a mission, and a promise to the beautiful children who deserve a place built entirely for them.

This past year was difficult in ways I didn’t expect. As a special education teacher in the public school system, I carried a daily weight of guilt — knowing what my students needed, deserved, and were promised, yet not being able to provide it all. I felt the pressure of trying to be 3 people (and 3 more) in one body, the exhaustion of stretching myself beyond what was humanly possible, and the sadness of watching systems fail children who needed more than “bare minimum.” But no matter the chaos that existed inside the system we were given, the reason we kept showing up — fully, wholeheartedly — was because of the deep source of love and safety we created inside our classroom every single day. We met our kids exactly where they were, and we went from there. They knew that when they stepped into our room, they were stepping into a place of safety, consistency, and unconditional care. They felt it. And we watched them grow because of it. Those moments, those relationships, those tiny victories and big breakthroughs — they are the heartbeat behind Spectrum Learning Academy.

When the school year ended, I finally had space to breathe. I took a couple of months to mourn, reflect, envision, collaborate, dream, and put everything onto paper. With the guidance of an incredibly inspiring mentor — and the unwavering belief that this school must exist — Spectrum Learning Academy began to take shape.

Every experience, good and bad, is shaping every decision going into this. We are learning constantly, adjusting thoughtfully, and building intentionally. We are in the founding stages of something truly extraordinary, and I am both eager for the future and fully present for each step of the journey.

I cannot wait for the day we are on the ground — moving, helping, teaching, supporting, loving, building this beautiful space for our students and their families. The dreams are big, and we will make them reality one day at a time.

As we wait for our 501(c)(3) approval, we are working tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare everything we need to begin serving children as soon as possible. There is so much happening, and so much more to come.
